the classic hilltown - if you only visit one, visit this. A massive medieval rocca (fort), atmospheric alleys and a full circuit of walls. Highlights are a surprisingly rich collection of Sienese paintings and scultures in the Museo Civico, a modest display of historic and modern glassware in the Museo del Vetro, the frescoed church of Sant Agostino and the large, cloistered San Francesco, now deconsecrated. For once you can skip the duomo - it’s nothing special. Much more special is the town’s Brunello wine which you can sample (budget permitting) at the Ars Bibendi on the central Piazza del Popolo, and about 200 other places. Opposite this enoteca is a wonderful café for sitting around and observing the passegiata, the 19th-century Fiaschetteria Italiana. If you want to learn more about Brunello there’s an exhibition in the town hall.
